TUG OF WAR HIGHLIGHTS AT THE 2023 UGANDA INTER-UNIVERSITY GAMES.

The Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) embraced Tug of War sport as the newest sport at their AGM early this month. It was confirmed by AUUS President Mrs Peninah Kebenge that her EXCOM was excited and wishes to take on Tug of war sport as the newest sport discipline in the next university games.

This positivity was witnessed when AUUS invited Federation of Uganda Tug of War Associations (FUTWA) to showcase a demo on 21st Dec 2023 at the closing ceremony of the just concluded 19th edition of the AUUS  University Games which were hosted by Uganda Christian University in Mukono.

A demonstration game of  the U23  female 520kg weight category between Uganda Christian University and Makerere University, excited  over 1500 University students who were present from more than 21 universities across the country.

Mrs Peninah Kabenge the President AUUS had this to say " I never thought that Tug of War had an international body and being played professionally, we have always thought of having Tug of war sport  as part of our National  university games competition but we lacked the right  stakeholders to give us the right sense of direction especially in form of training and officiation. 

When I was approached by Mr. Kintu Edmund the President, Federation of Uganda Tug Of War Associations with their bid to develop this sport through working with AUUS,  I knew we were moving in the right direction of making our dream come true with FUTWA's cooperation. We believe we will soon be able to hold a more professional university tug of war league since we are in touch with right Stakeholders".

" I am witnessing something good called the sport of Tug of War. I believe all Universities are ready to engage in this sport once availed in competitions,* said guest of honor Prof. Muganga Lawrence the Vice Chancellor Victoria University.

" As the Federation of Uganda Tug of War Associations, we feel so delighted by  AUUS invitation to showcase the sport on the day the competitions climaxe", said Mr. Kintu Edmund the President FUTWA.

 Tug of war is a game for all and I call upon all students to join in enjoy the sport. As FUTWA, we working tirelessly to move the sport across the country in line with guidelines from the National Council of Sports as we seek to acquire full recognition from the NCS so that we can compete in international Tug of war events to fly the Ugandan flag high across the global. We have already received invitation for the upcoming 2024 African Tug of war championships which will take place in Zimbabwe , added the FUTWA President ".

The Makerere University ladies proved a hard nut to crack as they gave the hosts Uganda Christian University ladies a run for their money by winning all the two rounds.
