FUTWA CONCLUDES WESTNILE REGION TUG OF WAR NTO LEVEL 1 TRAINING IN ARUA CITY.
On the 18th of April 2026, the Federation of Tug of War Associations Uganda (FUTWA) successfully conducted the National Technical Officer Level One Course for the West Nile Region. The training took place at Arua Prison Primary School in Arua City. The primary objective was to equip local sports teachers, enthusiasts, and administrators with the fundamental technical skills required to officiate and coach Tug of War in accordance with the 2025 Ugandan Sports Regulation.
Attendance and Participation
The training was attended by 37 participants, including teachers from various primary and secondary schools, district representatives, Girl guides / Scout leaders and members of the media. The diverse attendance reflects the growing interest in the sport across the West Nile sub-region.
Opening Ceremony
The workshop was officially opened by the Arua City Sports Officer, Mr. Candia Ronald, who highlighted the potential of Tug of War to engage youth in the region. He was accompanied by the Chairperson of the West Nile Region Tug of War Association Ms. Candiru Alba, who encouraged the participants to take the technical knowledge back to their respective districts to facilitate registration under the new legal framework.
Training Facilitation and Content
The course was facilitated by the FUTWA Chief Instructor and President. Training was based on the Tug of War Basic Skills Manual, covering:
Safety and Equipment: Standards for footwear, ropes, and protective gear.
Technical Officiating: Correct hand signals and start/finish protocols.
Pulling Mechanics: Body positioning and team coordination.
Evaluation and Practical Sessions
Written Examination: Conducted to ensure all trainees understood the theoretical rules and safety regulations.
Practical Session: Held at the Arua Prison Primary School playground. Trainees practiced coaching setups, match judging, and pulling demonstrations.
Conclusion
The event was covered by the West Nile TV (WTV) media team and concluded with the award of certificates to those who passed the examination. This training marks a significant step in establishing a professional technical base for Tug of War in the Westnile Region in Uganda.
FUTWA's theme for this year is "Fight Non Communicable Diseases through Tug of War Sport" by promoting physical Education in our communities.
